Body Armor for your Fitness Business

Some of you know that I was in a motorcycle accident this past weekend.

As I write this, I am recovering from a bruised knee and ankle. In fact, recovery is way ahead of what the medical professionals predicted.

My injuries were minimal and, all things considered, they could have been much worse.

I have learned:
If you are going to start running you will have an injury at some time.
If you are going to participate in triathlons you will injure yourself at some time.
You will eventually fall off your bicycle if you ride a lot.
If you ride a motorcycle you will eventually have some sort of mishap
If you sit on the couch and watch TV you will die of health complications

There is risk in all activities, just like there are risks in owning a business.

My motorcycle injuries were relatively minor, largely due to the steps I have taken to prepare myself for an accident. At the top of the list was a decision to always wear protective gear from head to toe.

Every fitness business owner needs to prepare for the inevitable challenges of running a business. “Protective gear” for the fitness professional is their contact list. When business takes an unexpected turn, their list of contacts is the first line of defense. It’s your individual insurance policy that will keep you profitable.

How big is your list? How complete is your list? What system do you have to keep your list up to date?

Plan today to be prepared for a surprise turn of events in your business by having a big list of contacts. Consider a big list your business’s body armor, the bigger list the better the protection.

Action Step #1 – Review your list. Take a good look at your list and inspect it for completeness. You should have a minimum of name, complete address, email and phone number. You should have this information for everyone who is in your business now or in the past – since day #1. You never know when this list will come in handy, so make a backup of it routinely.

Action Step #2 – Expand your list. Figure out how to add more names to your list on a routine basis. At a minimum of once a week, you or someone should be tasked with adding names to your list. Make sure each new addition has all the information listed above in action step #1

Action Step #3 – Create a way to tag and segment your list. When the time comes to use your list, and it could be next week, make sure you have a way to easily separate contacts into different categories. For example, be able to separate current, past and potential customers into unique groupings.

As you accomplish the steps above it’s very likely you will see an untapped opportunity in your list. For instance you may have noticed that you have some potential new members that are long overdue for a quick email promoting your programs. Think like a business person and you will likely see all kinds of possibilities. Remember action creates the results you want.

Did you notice this with the Solar Eclipse?

The solar eclipse 2017 is behind us.

Did it live up to the expectations? It depends on who you talk to.

It seems the closer you were to the total eclipse, the more profound the experience was.

In my case, we were in the path of the total eclipse and it was awesome. I have never experienced anything like it and I shall never forget the experience. Hundreds of thousands of people flooded into this are and there were all kinds of special events and viewing venues.

I chose to stay in my backyard and my neighbors and I had an impromptu viewing party.

Everything changed very quickly as the sun became temporarily hidden. The wind, temperature, insects and animals. Everything responded. Even the automatic light on the garage door signaled the darkness.

What struck me the most was the natural rhythm of life, which governs every aspect of our lives – sometimes in little subtle ways and sometimes in huge ways.

The natural rhythms of people’s lives also have a huge impact on our fitness business. Last week I outlined three steps to take advantage of the increased interest in fitness each of our markets will experience in the next 60 days.

Here are three ways you can help people make quicker choices to join your programs.

Action Step #1 – Create specials. For a limited time, offer some free samplings of your programs to get people interested in checking you out. Create opportunities for people to visit you more than once. For instance, have a free week instead of a free day.

Action Step #2 – Create urgency. When you offer your specials you create an urgency. Make the special valid only for a clearly defined and limited amount of time. People procrastinate. Give them a reason to make a quick decision.

Action Step #3 – Create a buzz about your business. Now is the perfect time to step up your social media presence. Create images of client success in the pictures and posts you publish. Best of all, publish some testimonials and case studies of people who have experienced significant gains in their quest for healthier lifestyles.

Notice the energy you feel when you are proactive with your intentional marketing efforts! When the natural tides are in your favor, make your biggest and boldest moves.  Remember action creates the results you want.

Lessons From the Solar Eclipse

Something truly unique will happen in four short days – The solar eclipse.

In this part of the country, the eclipse is right over us. We are going dark for about two minutes.

Having never experienced a total solar eclipse before, I am really excited about it. Surprisingly so.

In addition to my consulting business, I still offer a limited number of personal training sessions to a select group of clients. (Building this business from scratch in a completely new city is a story for another time.)

The business of the solar eclipse is interesting. Hotels have been booked for months, and in some cases for years. The start of the school year has been delayed until the day after the eclipse. Some businesses will have record sales this weekend. Yes, this has turned into a weekend celebration.

Some businesses will lose sales. Some of my clients are avoiding their training session on the day of the eclipse. Usually because they have family in town, but the financial impact for me is a loss of revenue.

I am actually encouraging them to NOT meet with me and to spend time with their families. This usually surprises them. I follow up with a suggestion that we meet at another time in order to keep them “on track’ with their fitness goals. Ninety-nine percent of the time they agree to a different/additional time!

Treating the challenge this way actually elevates their belief in me as an extraordinary trainer, and positions me as unique in their mind. It also preserves most of my income for that week and positively contributes to their renewing when the time comes for them to write out another check.

This event will be past us by Tuesday of next week. The important lesson here is to think about how we can capitalize on every interruption in people’s usual schedule. What can you do to turn a potential cash flow problem into an opportunity? In the fitness business, we are also guiding people to stay on track through the usual challenges of life. This is what all of our clients really want.

Here are three action steps to turn every calendar challenge into an opportunity for you to shine as a fitness coach/business owner.

Action Step #1 – Check your calendar. More specifically, check your marketing calendar and circle the important dates that could have a negative impact on your business. Start with holidays and go from there. Circle those dates in red.

Action Step #2 – Make a plan. For each of the dates circled, create a plan starting a week ahead of time of what you can do to accommodate people’s needs and still maintain your momentum and business growth.

Action Step #3 – Now that you have a plan, work your plan. Bring your team of coaches up to speed. Seek their involvement and suggestions. Commit action steps to writing and give everyone copies. Charge someone with leadership responsibility for each special event you have created plans for.

Notice the energy you feel when you are proactive in anticipation of obstacles. Turning obstacles into opportunities is powerful. Notice how your attitude improves with simple action?

This Happens Every Year

I returned home last night after 2,700 miles of riding on my Beemer. I was taking a partial break from my routine, and I was still working a little – remotely.

I was physically tired but very surprisingly energized. My energy centered on what I would like to see happen for the rest of 2017.

Last week I wrote about people taking a break in August and what you can do to take advantage of that natural trend. (I say it is a natural trend based on over 30 years of experience in the fitness industry.) You can read that post here.

I received a couple of calls this week and the callers were stressed that their prospects had disappeared and attendance in programs is really down right now. No surprise to me, I predicted it last week.

What to do about it became the focal point of our conversations. Keep in mind that most of these people will return, like I did, tired but re-energized about the rest of the year. In many cases this means getting back to their fitness goals in a couple of short weeks.

Will you be ready for this renewed interest and commitment?

If you get stuck having a pity party or being discouraged, it will come through in your conversations and it will turn people away. On the other hand, if you are consistently positive and encouraging, people will enthusiastically return to you when they are ready.

Follow these steps below to ensure that you have a great attitude and make the most of this annual opportunity.

Action Step #1 – Check your attitude. It is really easy to get discouraged at less than usual attendance. Even easier when your “hot” prospects seem to have a change of mind and go on vacation instead of buying your services. There are only two kinds of people in the world, your clients and your prospective clients. Remain positive and encouraging and your prospects will return to you as a person who understood and respected them.

Action Step #2 – Make a list. If your usual prospect list has temporarily dried up, it’s time to get more prospects. Start with making a list of 10 things you can do to build a big prospect list. Force yourself to come up with at least 10 things you could do. Then pick the top three things and begin working on them ASAP.

Action Step #3 – Take action on your list. Having trouble getting started on your #1 thing? Then make a list of ten things you could do to start working on that #1 thing right away. Then tackle one item at a time, finishing each one before moving on to the next thing. Makes notes of what you are doing and how you are doing it. We’ll use these notes later.

Notice how your attitude improves with simple action?

Exploding Tire at 75 MPH

This is real short and to the point this week.

I’m traveling on my motorcycle and spending time with family. These things recharge my batteries.

I hope you are recharging your batteries, too. August is the perfect time for us to do that in the fitness business.

Before I expand on that, let me quickly share what dreaded thing happened on the ride north. In the lane to my right, and slightly ahead of me, a tractor trailer blew a tire! Traffic was averaging 75 mph. I heard the explosion and instantly knew I was in a life-threatening situation.

Small pieces of the tire were flying through the air and hitting me and my bike. The bigger pieces were rotating wildly and I knew it was just a matter of seconds before they broke loose.

As best I could, I had mentally prepared for this dreaded possibility. I stayed calm and moved as far away from the truck as possible and accelerated to pass the truck. Thankfully, the rest of the tire broke free behind me. I was prepared and I was lucky. Eventually, my heart rate returned to normal.

Preparation and luck play a huge role in life and in business success.

August is an interesting time of the year in the fitness business. There is usually a bit of a lull before people get serious in September.

Are you prepared for the explosion of interest in fitness about to come your way?

Here are three things you can do NOW to make sure you are prepared and ready.

Action Step #1 – Take a break. If you haven’t already, get some time away from your business. Recharge your batteries. Your energy is your greatest asset and it will be attractive to your potential clients in September.

Action Step #2 – Review your 2017 goals. No matter what has happened so far this year, the last half of the year will be your most productive. It always works out that way and there is science to prove it. Decide now to make the rest of the year your most productive.

Action Step #3 – Decide what one thing you can do today that will move your business forward and do it each day for the rest of the year. This sounds simple and yet it is one of the most difficult things to do. Hint: it is usually something that you are uncomfortable with. But are you going to let your uncomfortableness stop you from the success you want?

Want to have a complimentary conversation about any of these ideas? Call me at 585-737-3316. If you get a busy signal, it’s because I’m coaching other people or enjoying my recharge time. Just leave a message and I’ll call you back.

Make it an awesome day!
