Lessons From the Solar Eclipse

Something truly unique will happen in four short days – The solar eclipse.

In this part of the country, the eclipse is right over us. We are going dark for about two minutes.

Having never experienced a total solar eclipse before, I am really excited about it. Surprisingly so.

In addition to my consulting business, I still offer a limited number of personal training sessions to a select group of clients. (Building this business from scratch in a completely new city is a story for another time.)

The business of the solar eclipse is interesting. Hotels have been booked for months, and in some cases for years. The start of the school year has been delayed until the day after the eclipse. Some businesses will have record sales this weekend. Yes, this has turned into a weekend celebration.

Some businesses will lose sales. Some of my clients are avoiding their training session on the day of the eclipse. Usually because they have family in town, but the financial impact for me is a loss of revenue.

I am actually encouraging them to NOT meet with me and to spend time with their families. This usually surprises them. I follow up with a suggestion that we meet at another time in order to keep them “on track’ with their fitness goals. Ninety-nine percent of the time they agree to a different/additional time!

Treating the challenge this way actually elevates their belief in me as an extraordinary trainer, and positions me as unique in their mind. It also preserves most of my income for that week and positively contributes to their renewing when the time comes for them to write out another check.

This event will be past us by Tuesday of next week. The important lesson here is to think about how we can capitalize on every interruption in people’s usual schedule. What can you do to turn a potential cash flow problem into an opportunity? In the fitness business, we are also guiding people to stay on track through the usual challenges of life. This is what all of our clients really want.

Here are three action steps to turn every calendar challenge into an opportunity for you to shine as a fitness coach/business owner.

Action Step #1 – Check your calendar. More specifically, check your marketing calendar and circle the important dates that could have a negative impact on your business. Start with holidays and go from there. Circle those dates in red.

Action Step #2 – Make a plan. For each of the dates circled, create a plan starting a week ahead of time of what you can do to accommodate people’s needs and still maintain your momentum and business growth.

Action Step #3 – Now that you have a plan, work your plan. Bring your team of coaches up to speed. Seek their involvement and suggestions. Commit action steps to writing and give everyone copies. Charge someone with leadership responsibility for each special event you have created plans for.

Notice the energy you feel when you are proactive in anticipation of obstacles. Turning obstacles into opportunities is powerful. Notice how your attitude improves with simple action?
