Almost exactly 5 months ago I had an accident on my motorcycle.
With adrenaline filling my veins my veins, and numbing my brain, I immediately started doing things that, when looking back, were really stupid.
I was trying to fix the bike enough so I could ride it the 75 miles to get back home.
Really dumb on my part. As I learned later from a repair shop, the bike was completely totaled.
A few weeks before I had visited a local gym. They had added my name to their calling list for marketing purposes. When they called me right after my accident I explained that I was on crutches and would not be able to work out for a while.
They then called again about 3 weeks later. Guess why they called?
They called to see how my recovery was going! They were sincere and never asked when I would be able to come to the gym to start my free trial. They really wanted to know about my recovery.
I was stunned and very impressed. They did exactly what I teach my clients.
That is marketing at it’s very best. They demonstrated timely follow through that they genuinely cared about me, that they understood my situation, and I was just not another “number” to sell a membership to. If I was looking for a gym, they would go to the top of my list.
They were using a strategy to make follow-up calls, keep notes from those calls, and schedule a time for the next follow-up call. They had perfected a simple marketing system that was highly personalized.
This is not rocket science. It is the difference between a mediocre fitness business and a great fitness business. It’s what I teach.
