Three Keys to a Great Coaching Team

The days are colder and the nights are longer. Not really, as we still have the same 24 hours in our day, but you get the picture.

It’s simply the change of seasons and the holidays just around the corner. Yes, there is stress with the holidays and, at the same time, there is a huge amount of goodwill and generosity that reveals itself. All of this helps us with our fitness business!

We are in the connection business. We connect with our people. It’s a tremendous bond that brings us together and keep us together, through good times as well as challenging times.

It all starts with truly connecting with our team of coaches and related staff. In this country, job success is attributed to soft skills more than technical skills. This is especially true in the fitness industry. Job success is 15% technical skills and 85% soft skills. No longer will, “If you build it, they will come,” work like it did a few short years ago. Soft skills are the opportunity to bring our game up.

Behind every successful fitness business there is a leader who understands the soft skills that transform a team from well-intended trainers to a closely knit and excited group of individuals with a common mission.

Creating this cohesive group makes all the difference in the business owner’s life.

Cohesiveness is based on three principles. Violate them at your own risk. Want an image to remember? Consider a three-legged stool. Take one leg away and the stool becomes useless. The same is true of these three principles. All three are required to create and maintain a team.

The best fitness businesses, the ones that will still be here five years from now, will thrive because they followed the principles below when creating and managing their teams.

Here are three founding principles of a great team.

1. Communication. Communication is key to any relationship. We all have one thing in common – we have failed the mind reading class. We only know and can deal with the things that are being communicated to us. It’s a two-way street.

2. Loyalty. Loyalty is not about kissing up to someone, it’s about telling them what they need to hear. We all have blind spots and “don’t know what we don’t know.” Loyalty only seems like a risk when the leadership has not made it acceptable to be loyal. Once a leader has encouraged loyalty, they will never go back to any other way.

3. Edification. This is a big one and almost a lost art. Edification is verbally and emotionally supporting each other. If it is not possible to edify each other it’s time for a discussion, behind closed doors. (Note: We do not have to agree with each other, but we must be united as a team and edifying each other in front of our customers.) Once a staff team habitually edifies each other you will be amazed how your business explodes.

Put all three of these principles to work. Teach them. Practice them. Live them.  And watch how your business explodes.
