It happens to all of us.
Sometimes things just don’t go as planned.
We can find ourselves in a crisis situation where something has to happen and happen fast.
Usually the situation is almost paralyzing. The intensity of the problem and the situation can be overwhelming, and the pressure is constant. And the nagging fact remains that something must be done.
It’s curious to me that the first response is often, “Well, there is nothing I can do but wait.” In fact, there are usually a number of well-meaning friends and associates that counsel us this very thing.
Rarely does this course of action pay off in a positive way.
If you are lucky, you will run across someone who will have a completely different approach. Usually this person has actually been there. They are a rare and fortunate find.
They will strongly suggest that the only way out of the crisis is to take action.
This sounds great, but how do you take action against seemingly insurmountable odds, especially when you are under such stress.
Listed below are three steps that will get you moving in the right direction.
1. Make a list of 10 things. Make a list of 10 things you can do today to move closer to a solution for your problem. Don’t stop until you have a list of 10 things. It may seem impossible to come up with 10 things, but keep going until the list is complete. Don’t judge or evaluate the items on the list, write down whatever comes to your mind regardless of how you feel about it.
2. Sort your list. Only after you have 10 things on your list should you then sort your list. What item(s) on your list has the best probability of creating success, all things considered? What are your top three things on your list? Sort this list through until you have your priorities and probabilities in order. Decide on your number one priority that you can start on right now.
3. Work on priority #1. From Step #2 above, immediately start on priority #1 by making a list of 10 things you can do right now to create momentum. Prioritize this secondary list in order of importance. Remember these must be things you can do today. Your goal is to work your way through it ASAP. Tomorrow you start over with a new list and crush it. Don’t worry about the results as much as the effort. Results will follow the effort in sometimes almost mysterious ways, but you will begin to see results. And you will feel much better about you and the problem you are facing.
