Adding Personal Training (Or Another Program) – Step 1

I put myself through college working at a local YMCA.

After four years of part-time work I had done about every imaginable job in the YMCA. I looked for a full-time job in the YMCA and easily found one.

The President of the Y’s board of directors, a local businessman, at my part-time job wanted to see me and asked permission to share a business insight he had. Eagerly, I agreed.

His message was simple. – You can’t please everybody, so don’t even try. As a newly minted college graduate, I smiled and thanked him for his comment.

Today, I wish I could thank him again for one of the greatest business lessons of my life.

You may be wondering what this has to do with this issue of fitness business tips and the answer is everything. This whole email series is about growing your fitness businesses. Growing your fitness business means making deliberate choices about who your market is and how to serve them.

Don’t try to please everyone. In fact, go in a different direction – narrowly define your market and work to please only those people. You will be happier and more profitable working with a narrowly-defined niche market. The solution for surviving in a competitive market is to narrow your focus and deepen your value.

Trying to be everything for everybody is a recipe for disaster.

This week’s email is focused on only one tip, adding personal training, or a new program, to your business. If you already have a training business, you can use this information to grow your business even more.

Here are your fitness business tips for the week: (Please let me know if there are other topics that would be helpful to you.)

  1. Adding Personal Training – Step 1 – Find a need. The key to success in any business is to find a need and fill it. Adding personal training is no different. Check out this video and make a list of 10 needs you see in your market that personal training/coaching could fill.
  2. Step 2 – Pricing your personal training on 4/20/17
  3. Step 3 – Create an offering comes on 4/27/17

Make it an awesome day!

Get New Members & Clients That Stay With You in 2017

Why offer a fitness business webinar in the busy month of December?

Every year people look for fitness programs on January 1st. It’s common knowledge that a high percentage of them, in spite of all good intentions, will lose their enthusiasm in a couple of weeks.

After decades of working in the fitness industry, I have come to recognize that the fitness industry is largely (more than 50%) responsible for this attrition. The small gym owner, coaches, staff and personal trainers share in the responsibility for this high attrition rate.

I understand completely that many people are enthusiastic and get really excited about their new commitment to fitness, only to lose their emotional energy more quickly than the soreness, from over-doing it, leaves their legs. Can you blame them?

It does not have to be that way.

It is in the coach’s best interest, as well as the client’s, that we consider a different approach. Most fitness professionals that I have known over my lifetime are truly committed to helping their students become more fit and lead healthier lives. The more people we help with this mission, the better we feel about what we do. And incidentally, is there anything more worthy than helping people lead healthier lives? Think of the long-range impact on every aspect of society. From health care to quality family life to longevity and personal happiness.

The fitness professional is in a noble profession, yet many struggle. I see it every day in my consulting business. That is why I have created the programs, consultancy and business model that now motivates me every day.

What if there was a way to lose fewer energized people, who truly want to live healthier lives, each January and to improve the lives of the fitness professional at the same time?

There is a way!

Based on experience and feedback from trainers all over the country, I have created a program, The Ultimate New Client Machine – to get new members and clients that stay with you in 2017. This program is specifically for the fitness professional. I know that the fitness professional is the key to making the New Year’s resolution possible. When we make a big change in our habits or our lifestyle, we need guidance. That is where the fitness professional comes in – to guide us through those rocky first few weeks.

This program is about helping fitness professionals build better businesses, which, of course, is wholly and completely dependent on helping others achieve their goals.  The two cannot be separated.

The Ultimate New Client Machine – to get new members and clients that stay with you in 2017 is a program that gets to the core of a successful training business. It’s action-packed, challenging and it will require some work. It’s all doable and those that put the work in will achieve new levels of business success, built on helping others achieve their fitness goals.

The material in this program is delivered over three live webinars and participants will have access to the material to review and revisit as they see fit.

More information can be found here: The Ultimate New Client Machine – to get new members and clients that stay with you in 2017.

Through Wednesday, December 14, 2016 the program is being offered at a 40% discount. The price is reduced from $497 to $297.

Sometimes our hearts are very heavy. My niece and her husband lost a beautiful baby boy this week. It was not a surprise as we all knew it was inevitable, yet the pain runs deep for everyone in our family.

I am so proud of my niece and her husband as they are one of the best examples of courage, faith and strength that I have ever witnessed. They are a true inspiration to everyone who knows their story.

I hesitated to share this information with you, but decided to – as a reminder to all of us to count our blessings and live each day to the absolute fullest. Life is short. Life is precious.

Always take time to celebrate the little things with your immediate family, and to celebrate with your fitness family. It is critically important.

Here are your fitness business tips for the week:

1. For you – Astro Teller’s TED talk, “The Unexpected Benefit of Celebrating Failure,” made me re-think about how I view failure.

2. For Your Business – What do you do? If you have been following these emails you now have a 3-second, 30 second and 3-minute answer to the question what do you do. Let’s put your “intros” up against a quick test. Do you describe what you do in terms of what is important to your prospective clients? Check this short video, to create a huge advantage over your competition.

3. For Your Clients and Members – Do your members ever have questions about stretching or reliving muscle soreness in certain areas? If so, “36 Pictures To See Which Muscle You are Stretching,” might help them. If we could just get rid of the ads…

As always, please let me know your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions about these posts, the fitness industry, and anything else Fitness Biz.

I was a volunteer last weekend at a local triathlon. My job was to hand out finisher’s medals at the finish line. This may be my favorite volunteer job at any sporting event.

I love seeing people’s faces light up when they cross the finish line and accomplish their goal. Everyone reacts a little differently, but the common theme is incredible self-satisfaction. For those of us in the fitness business, these are the magic moments that make everything we do so meaningful and priceless.

The energy I gained from these finishers, will power me for days, and I know you experience this satisfaction every day too.

Here are this week’s tips to help you build an indestructible fitness business – now.

1. For you – This book will give you great insights on how people really make decisions and why your tribe is so critical Sway by Ori Brafman and Rom Brafman.

2. For Your Business – What do you do? Have you written it down for all to see? CrossFit answers the question, “What is fitness?” In 100 words. Your challenge this week is for you to describe what you do in 100 words. Take a few minutes and write out in compelling and interesting terms what you do in your business.

3. For your Clients and Members – Quote: “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” How can you show your people more, of how much you care?

As always, please let me know your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions about these posts, the fitness industry, and anything else Fitness Biz.

If you are looking to add more members and clients to your business in the next two weeks, you are at the right place, but you must act on these free strategies now. The month of May has great energy for life, and fitness/activity fits right into the positive energy of change.

Here are this week’s tips:

1. For you – This one has me intrigued too! – Check out this post on Inc.com “Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends: Pick 3.” We face the same challenges building our fitness businesses that other entrepreneurs face. I am constantly struggling with this one. How do you manage this challenge?

2. For Your Business – Getting new members this month. Last week I talked about the month of May being National Fitness and Sports Month. This is a perfect time for you to add new members to your business. People are looking for fitness programs this time of the year and you can take advantage of this natural momentum with a tie-in to this month’s theme. Your free step-by-step plan is here. (Mp apologies for the background sounds, editing video is not my strength, yet.)

3. For your Clients and Members – Check out this list of exercises that burn more fat than running. I’ll bet many of these exercises are already part of your programming. Send this link out to your mailing list and encourage them to pass it on to their friends. Sending this link will increase your credibility and it is so easy to do. Bonus Tip: tie this into your special event outlined in #2 above by mentioning your upcoming Free Trial Workout.

3-4 Thursday 4/28/16

I sent this out earlier, and I am posting it here again in response to a request to have all of the the posts in one place. Thanks for your feedback.

I am attending a marketing training event. The sessions started early this morning and are still going at 10pm. This is my kind of day. Get it done. I am already on overload and there are three more days.

1. I am thinking about – Taking time to work on your business rather than in your business. This is what I am doing this weekend and it is so refreshing. It’s hard to break away, but so worth it. In my experience taking time to work on the business always pays huge dividends, especially when working on a fitness business where everything is constantly changing.

2. Interesting thought from this conference – 90% of every business’s success comes from it’s marketing. How many fitness people believe that success in the fitness business comes exclusively from quality programming and training? It’s a challenging thought worth considering.

3. Quote on my mind this week -“If you hang around four broke people, you will be the fifth.” I guess the same applies to fitness. If you hang around four unfit people, will you be the fifth? What do you think?

3 – 4 Thursday

We moved again! This time from our temporary apartment into a permanent house. Now we are finally settled, or actually we are in the unpacking stages of settling into a permanent location. It feels great. We downsized significantly 6 months ago when we moved from Rochester, NY to Greenville, SC. And still I find myself amazed at the amount of material things I own.

1. I am thinking about – As I find downsizing more and more appealing to me, I am very appreciative of a blog I have subscribed to over the past several years. Reading Leo’s blogs helps keep me mindful of the choices I am making on a daily basis. Here is the link for Zen Habits, one of the few blogs I look forward to reading. Check out the archives section of his Website.

2. Book recommendation for your business – I am just part way through this book and already I am thinking a little differently about my business. This book is destined to become a reference manual on my desk. Ask.,” by Ryan Levesque, is a must-read if you are evolving your business model.

3. Quote, (or Poem?) on my mind as I plan my summer…

We shall not cease from exploring

And the end of our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time. ~T.S. Eliot

3-4- Thursday

My 3-4-Thursday Tips:

1. Book recommendation… “Ready To Run“, by Kelly Starrett. If you know of Kelly’s work, it’s based on the belief that we should be able to do most of our own therapies. I think this is a must-have for any runner or fitness trainer.

2. Daily routine or habit that has caught my attention…. The 10-minute guideline outlined above and in my blog post here. It’s not so much about the results I’m getting with the flexibility of my feet, as much as it is about the inspiration I’m getting to apply this technique to other areas of my life that I would like to improve. My plan is to add one new thing a month. I’ll keep you posted on how things go.

3. Business Growth Idea... March is a great time of the year to promote your fitness business. There is an energy people have for nice weather. And of course, people are concerned, whether they tell you or not, about how they’re going to look with fewer clothes on in the summertime. This is a perfect time begin to promote that you have a plan for people to look good in their swimsuits. I have done a number of these campaigns so don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like a couple of ideas.
